A new survey conducted by lock manufacturer Yale has found that 32 percent of Brits do not use Facebook, Instagram or the likes while they are away for fear of alerting burglars to the fact that their property is empty.
Karl Woolley, Head of Product Management at Yale said: “Earlier and darker nights can provide more cover for burglars to approach homes undetected. Simple measures such as ensuring all doors and windows are locked or installing security lights or cameras outside are a great first step in improving home security."
the extended hours of darkness provide an opportune time for burglars, making home security more important than ever.
The research also revealed that over half (53 per cent ) of Brits become more conscious of home security as the nights get darker during these months.
The most common measures homeowners and renters take to make them feel safer at home during the darker months include ensuring the backdoor is locked (79 percent), ensuring windows are locked (78 percent) and using outdoor motion lighting (54%).
Woolley added: "Yale’s Smart Security Ecosystem has a range of alarms, security cameras and locks to take home security to the next level. The ecosystem can be accessed and monitored from the Yale Home app, providing security, control and convenience in the palm of your hand.”
